Lee Davis joins Makovsky + Company as group vice president

Marketing and communications expert Lee Davies has joined New York-based public relations, investor relations and branding firm Makovsky + Company in the position of group vice president of the company’s Health Practice. Makovsky, which has had a 100 per cent client retention rate in 2011, is a founder member of public relations agency partnership IPREX, and has agency partners in more than 37 US cities and 27 countries worldwide.
Davies, who will also join the firm’s Leadership Committee, is no stranger to such a large portfolio. His more than 30 years’ experience in healthcare communications, gained from both pharmaceutical firms and communications agencies, has spanned roles in advertising, sales, public relations, product management and medical education at companies including Ogilvy Worldwide Public Relations, Pfizer and Schering-Plough, among others. Most recently he held the positions of director, global media relations (cardiovascular, oncology, diabetes, women’s health) and director, global product communications (oncology) at Merck & Co.
"Lee Davies is a rare industry talent with experience encompassing pharma marketing communications, media relations and crisis and issues management," said Gil Bashe, executive vice president and Health Practice director at Makovsky, to whom Davies will report in his new role.
"Through my experience at industry leader Merck, I've had the opportunity to work with many exceptional colleagues and well-known agencies through the years," said Davies. "Makovsky always impressed me with their deep bench of health-sector experience and strategies that deliver results. I'm extremely happy to be part of a culture that values collaboration and client delight."
The appointment of Davies to lead the Health Practice comes after two other recruits joined at the beginning of the month: on 1 December, it was announced that Beth Conner had joined the Health Practice as assistant vice president, and Eliza Merves as account executive.
Beth Conner previously spent six years at Edelman Public Relations Health in Chicago and New York City, where she managed consumer and patient-focused initiatives for pharmaceutical clients in Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and women’s health categories. Eliza Merves, who works currently on a Makovsky Health account supporting cholesterol awareness, is an alumna of Ogilvy Public Relations. During her tenure at that agency, she helped organise and implement large-scale consumer campaigns, and co-ordinated logistics for celebrity spokespeople.
