UCB launches patient video diaries for European Epilepsy Day

A UCB-backed video diary project exploring what it is like to live with epilepsy has been launched to coincide with European Epilepsy Day, February 13, 2012.

The diaries are part of the Epilepsy in our Time initiative, which started in 2010 and has followed the lives and experiences of a broad range of people, both those diagnosed with epilepsy and their carers, from across Europe over the last two years.

Marion Clignet, one of the patients involved, said: “There are a lot of issues and a lot of questions on people’s minds, but having epilepsy does not make you a burden to society and on the contrary it can sometimes make you even stronger.”

Marion and fellow patients Lloyd, Monica, Jerome, David and Julia open the doors to their worlds, revealing their personal experiences of living with the condition through a short self-filmed diary.

Epilepsy in our Time aims to encourage people living with the condition to work together with their healthcare team and inspire them to achieve their personal goals.

Lode Dewulf, UCB’s vice president of global medical affairs, said: “Epilepsy In Our Time provides a direct insight into what it means to live with epilepsy in 2012. It is important for people with epilepsy and those who care for them to connect with each other for support and inspiration.

“By sharing personal stories we hope to improve the perception and understanding of the condition.”

European Epilepsy Day is an initiative of the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and this year’s theme is the burden of epilepsy.

Epilepsy is the most common serious brain disorder worldwide, affecting 6 million people in Europe.
